Therapeutic Massage in Saco, ME

Hands-on soft tissue work for pain, stiffness and injury recovery. Dr. Reiche may prescribe therapeutic massage at our Saco office on its own, or alongside the rest of your chiropractic care.

Man getting a massage

Whether you are living with chronic pain or trying to get over an injury more quickly and completely, therapeutic massage gives us a drug-free way to work directly on the soft tissue. Used well, it can help you combat pain without medication, increase your range of motion, and support your general health.

How Massage Works

Massage has a long and distinguished history as a therapeutic treatment. Manipulating soft tissue can increase blood and lymph flow, relax tight muscles and tendons, and help an injured body part heal itself more readily while ridding itself of inflammatory substances more efficiently.

It can also support your ongoing wellness. Better blood flow, organ function and fluid drainage help your immune system respond, and relaxed muscles are less prone to injury.

The Techniques We May Use

Different forms of massage address different needs, so the technique is chosen for the problem.

  • Swedish massage — soothes and relaxes the surface tissues
  • Deep tissue massage — breaks up internal scar tissue and treats chronic problems closer to the bones
  • Trigger point massage — relieves the muscle knots that can cause pain elsewhere in the body
  • Sports massage — uses any of these techniques on specific muscles that must perform well or recover from overuse

What Dr. Reiche May Prescribe Massage For

Massage therapy is used here to address problems such as:

  • Acute sprains and strains
  • Chronic musculoskeletal pain
  • Neck or back pain
  • Chronic headaches
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome and other repetitive motion injuries
  • Arthritis inflammation
  • Circulatory disorders
  • Sleep problems
  • Mood disorders
  • Prenatal discomfort

What a Session Is Like

  1. It is prescribed, not picked off a menu

Dr. Reiche decides whether massage suits your problem and which technique to use, so an acute strain and a long-standing ache are not treated the same way.

  2. Hands-on soft tissue work

The session works the muscles, tendons and other soft tissue by hand. Nothing is invasive and no medication is involved.

  3. Often scheduled before your adjustment

Dr. Reiche may book massage immediately before a chiropractic adjustment so you take the full benefit of the combination.

  4. Repeated where repeating helps

Ongoing sessions may prove most helpful with a chronic pain condition, and multiple sessions usually offer the greatest benefit when treating an injury.

Common Questions About Therapeutic Massage

Does therapeutic massage hurt?

It should not. The pressure follows the technique — Swedish work stays at the surface and relaxes it, while deep tissue work goes deeper to reach chronic problems closer to the bone. Say so during the session if anything is uncomfortable.

How many sessions will I need?

That depends on what is being treated. Ongoing sessions may be most helpful if you live with a chronic pain condition, and multiple sessions usually offer the greatest benefit for an injury. Dr. Reiche will tell you what he has in mind.

Can I have massage and an adjustment on the same visit?

Yes. Dr. Reiche may schedule massage immediately before your chiropractic adjustment, because relaxed muscles are less likely to resist the adjustment. That combination is covered on our chiropractic massage therapy page.

Is massage used on its own, or only with other treatment?

Both. It is prescribed on its own and alongside other treatments here, including chiropractic adjustments, therapeutic ultrasound, muscle stimulation and corrective exercises.
